Cells' War - Microbial World

Cells' war -microbial world-

Struggle for survival, ruthless competition, predator-prey interactions are intrinsic to any organism in nature, to unicellular organisms too.

I captured the predator-prey "hunting" interactions shown in the video between an amoeba (protozoan) and diatoms (silica "shelled" algae) a while ago from an environmental water sample .

I found fascinating and a bit "terrifying" the relentless amoeba search and selection of diatoms. It didn't ingested all diatoms it encountered. I would like to know why, wouldn't you?

Despite their hard silica cells, diatoms were easy prey for a soft -amorphous- amoeba cell.
